I Don t Like Cops - 762 Words
Although several youth shared personal stories of their negative interactions with SROs, there are other youth that were neutral towards SROs. One youth in particular did not have empathy nor respect for law enforcement as a whole (let alone a SRO), he said, ââ¬Å"Everytime Iââ¬â¢m with a cop, Iââ¬â¢m always getting arrested for no reason. [Weââ¬â¢ll] be co-operating and theyââ¬â¢ll be throwing my (expletive) on the floor. Theyââ¬â¢ll tighten the cuffs even more for no reason while weââ¬â¢re cooperating and shit. Thatââ¬â¢s the reason why I donââ¬â¢t like cops.â⬠Another youth expressed neutrality by stating, ââ¬Å"Some of them are good to an extent. Some of them, just like how thereââ¬â¢s good people, thereââ¬â¢s bad people that abuse their power like a dictator.â⬠Authoritative Separatism Youth expressed their discontent with the current SRO on their school campus. Youth informed the researcher that the former SRO was more genuine with his interaction. For example, many of the youth responded, ââ¬Å"He actually played football with the kids out thereâ⬠, ââ¬Å"Like heââ¬â¢ll talk and have a conversation with youâ⬠, and ââ¬Å"He would talk to you. Like when you talk to a cop, thereââ¬â¢s somewhat or a little bit of intimidation. With him [Burns], you donââ¬â¢t feel like that. You feel like youââ¬â¢re talking to a normal person.â⬠Allowing SROs the capability to develop personal relationships with youth can ease the existing tensions and lessen the stigma surrounding police officers as a whole.
